University of California, Berkeley, Durant Hall

Project Description

In the renovation of this historic building into administrative offices, the intent was to retain as much as possible of the historic fabric of the building while bringing it up to current codes and installing an elevator. This required replacing of most of the building systems, including a new normal power service and emergency power for life safety functions. Additional electrical work included the addition of panel boards and related feeders, new branch circuit wiring, and a new fire alarm system. Mechanical work was highly specialized and involved completely replacing the mechanical systems and infrastructure: HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and site piping.  After an assessment of campus utilities, a design was implemented that recovered heat from the campus condensate piping loop, and cut the building off from campus steam.

The renovation of Durant Hall was awarded the status of LEED Silver Certified with the new mechanical and electrical systems exceeding California’s mandated energy efficient standards by 17 percent.
